"As the twig is bent, so grows the tree"
Usually, the infant's skull is functionally ready to adapt to the torsional forces of labour. But, occasionally the head, neck and other soft tissues throughout the body may have difficulty in recovering from the birthing process. These and other mechanical strains experienced during labour may result in changes in function either in ability of the baby to move the neck or arms properly or other problems such as colic or feeding difficulties.
Babies and children, because of their vitality and plasticity are very open to receiving gentle osteopathic treatment that can help the recipient facilitate significant improvement in his/her presenting discomfort.
As children grow, other conditions may become apparent, such as glue ear, asthma and co-ordination difficulties. Or in older children, growing pains, sports injuries and postural problems. Osteopathy may significantly alleviate these problems and will include advice on other factors, which may aid recovery such as changes to daily environment, diet and exercise.
Parents can be reassured that the Osteopath will always advise specialist referral to a paediatrician, your doctor or another health professional if considered necessary.
